If your plans change after you buy a train ticket, you have two options: change to another train, or return the ticket for a refund. Vexere is an online train booking platform and a ticket agent for Vietnam Railways train tickets. Tickets booked on Vexere can be changed to a new date or time, or refunded, online in the My Tickets section, with no need to go to the station. Changing a ticket costs 20.000VND per ticket. Refunding a ticket costs 10% to 20% of the ticket price. Both must be done before the train departs, within the deadlines set by Vietnam Railways.
This article brings together everything you need in one place: the latest Vietnam Railways rules on ticket changes and refunds, step-by-step instructions on Vexere, the actual fees, and how long it takes for the refund to reach your account.
Vexere's tip: if there are more than 24 hours left before departure and you still want to travel on the same route, changing your ticket is almost always cheaper than returning it. For example, on a 800.000VND ticket, a change costs only 20.000VND, while a refund costs 80.000VND.

Many people search for "cancel train ticket", "refund train ticket" or "return train ticket", but these all refer to the same action. Vietnam Railways calls it returning a ticket: you give the ticket back and receive a refund after fees are deducted. In the Vexere app, this button is called Refund. It sits right next to the Change ticket button on each ticket in the My Tickets section.
Changing a ticket is a different action. Your journey stays the same (departure station, arrival station and passenger name), but you move to a different date, time, train number or car class. You do not receive a refund. You only pay the change fee, plus the fare difference if the new ticket costs more.
The following Vietnam Railways rules apply to both tickets bought at the station and tickets bought online through agents such as Vexere:
If the train is expected to arrive 3 hours or more later than the time on the ticket, Vietnam Railways lets you return the ticket free of charge or change to another train.
Train tickets booked on Vexere can be changed directly in the app. The new ticket only needs to differ from the old one in at least one detail: travel date, train number or car class.
Change ticket and Refund buttons on a train ticket in My Tickets, Vexere app My Tickets in the Vexere app: each train ticket has an E-ticket button, a Change ticket button and a Refund button.
On Vexere, changing a train ticket online takes only a few minutes, much less time than queuing at the station ticket counter.
Yes, as long as you make the change at least 24 hours before the departure time of your original ticket. Seats on the new train depend on availability. Vexere recommends checking train schedules and fares on Vexere before you change your ticket, especially during holidays and Tet, when sleeper berths often sell out early.
From May 15, 2026, Vietnam Railways allows online ticket changes on dsvn.vn for two types of tickets: tickets bought online and paid by bank account (e-wallet payments are not supported), and tickets bought at the station and paid with VietQR. The process has 4 steps and includes OTP verification (source: Tuoi Tre newspaper). If you booked your ticket on Vexere, change it on Vexere so your new ticket is managed in the same place.
Train tickets booked on Vexere can be returned online 24/7, with no need to go to the station:
The calculation is simple: amount refunded = ticket price minus the refund fee. The table below shows examples for an individual ticket on a regular day.
Example train ticket change and refund fees by timing. Source: calculated by Vexere based on Vietnam Railways rules
| Ticket price | Change ticket (≥24 hours before) | Return ≥24 hours before (10%) | Return 4 to under 24 hours before (20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80.000VND | 20.000VND | Fee 10.000VND (minimum fee), you receive 70.000VND | Fee 16.000VND, you receive 64.000VND |
| 500.000VND | 20.000VND | Fee 50.000VND, you receive 450.000VND | Fee 100.000VND, you receive 400.000VND |
| 1.200.000VND | 20.000VND | Fee 120.000VND, you receive 1.080.000VND | Fee 240.000VND, you receive 960.000VND |
Based on Vexere's calculations, returning a ticket 24 hours or more before departure saves you half the fee compared with returning it close to departure.
Train tickets returned on Vexere are usually refunded within 1 to 7 working days. If you paid by card, the refund can take 7 to 30 working days. The processing time starts once your refund request has been successfully recorded, and the money is always returned to the payment method you used.

If you bought your train ticket with cash at the station ticket counter, you return it and receive your cash refund at the station.
In the following cases, you need to go to the station and bring an ID or passport that matches the details on your ticket:
Returning a train ticket in the last 24 hours before departure means paying a 20% fee instead of 10%. Vexere recommends four ways to save on fees:
On Vexere, you see the refund fee and the exact amount you will receive before you confirm, so there are no surprises when the refund arrives.
